# Beach, Sunset and Dinner: A Day on Puerto Rico’s West Coast

## Content

Puerto Rico’s west coast runs on a fairly specific order: water first, adventure next, and —always last— sunset with something in your hand. Aguadilla and Isabela sit less than half an hour apart, and between them they make up a full day that starts with a mask and snorkel and ends at a table with a view.

Here is how to string it together, with the stops worth making and the places that will feed you along the way.

### Morning: into the water

Crash Boat is the beach that defines Aguadilla. The pilings of the old pier are still there, underwater, and they have turned into a living structure: tropical fish, coral formations and, with a bit of luck, a turtle, a ray or a seahorse. It is one of the few places on the island where you get real snorkeling a few meters from shore, which makes it work for first-timers and experienced swimmers alike.

If you would rather go with a guide and gear included, the [guided snorkeling trip through the turquoise waters of Crash Boat](https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/haciendacarey/items/640481/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=lanzavision&ref=lanzavision&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no) is the easy way to do it: they take you to the good spots and you skip the trial and error.

**Before you head out**, have a proper breakfast. [Lucas and Ella Restaurant](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/lucas-and-ella-restaurant/) is the natural stop: brunch with pancakes, French toast and omelets in a calm room, the kind that does not rush your morning.

### Midday: adventure along the coast

With the sun high, the plan moves onto land. Two options, depending on how much adrenaline you are after.

The first one is on horseback. The [guided ride through the trails of Playuela](https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/horseridespr/items/619968/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=lanzavision&ref=lanzavision&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no) crosses countryside and natural paths before opening onto the coastal stretch, which is where the photos happen. It is a ride, not a test: it works even if you have never been on a horse.

The second one is vertical. In Isabela, twenty minutes away, [rappelling the limestone cliffs at Royal Isabela](https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/royalisabela/items/748105/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=lanzavision&ref=lanzavision&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no) means a 55-foot descent —twice— with gear and a trained team. It is built as an introduction: controlled exhilaration, not extreme sport.

And if your day leans more toward seeing than sweating, the [cultural tour of the town of Isabela](https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/royalisabela/items/674315/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=lanzavision&ref=lanzavision&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no) is a three-hour trip through the old Ermita ruins, the plaza, the historic church and the Casa de la Cultura, then out along the coast by van, closing with a tasting of pitorro. It includes a certified guide, water, snacks and lunch, so it handles the midday meal too.

### Lunch: quick, by the ocean

If you stay in Aguadilla, lunch happens without leaving the coast. [The Reef Burger & Seafood bar](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/the-reef/) is the casual option —gourmet burgers and seafood in a bar-restaurant format— while [Peña Blanca Restaurant](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/pena-blanca-restaurant/) and [Rompeolas Restaurant](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/rompeolas-bar-grill/) are the classic version: seafood, meat and Puerto Rican cooking with the ocean right there.

### Sunset: the west coast hour

This is where the west earns its reputation. Facing the Atlantic from the northwest, the sun drops almost straight into the water, and two addresses in Aguadilla are built for exactly that moment:

- [Aguadilla RoofTop experience (ARTe)](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/aguadilla-rooftop-experience-arte/) — rooftop with panoramic views, craft cocktails and music. The plan is to go up early, take a spot and stay.
- [Sal de Mar Restaurant & Rooftop Bar](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/sal-de-mar-restaurant-rooftop-bar/) — contemporary cooking and craft cocktails, also on a rooftop, also wide open to the view.

If you would rather have your sunset at sea level, [Desecheo Restaurant](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/desecheo/) and [El Bohío @ El Faro](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/el-bohio/) deliver it right by the water, fresh fish included.

### Dinner: closing well

Two ways to finish slowly. [Restaurante Bocas](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/restaurante-bocas/) is about shared plates, seafood and cocktails in a modern room; [Messalina](https://lanzavision.net/en/listado/messalina/) is the town’s white-tablecloth option, Italian and international cooking in an elegant space that never turns stiff.

The rest of what the town has, with locations and booking, is in our guide to [restaurants in Aguadilla](/en/restaurants-in-aguadilla/).

### Where to stay

If the day runs long —and on the west coast it does— staying nearby saves you the night drive back on the 22. [Hotel Vista Azul](https://expedia.com/affiliates/aguadilla-hoteles-hotel-vista-azul.K9xnZRX) is right in the area, and if you would rather compare before deciding, here is the [list of places to stay in Aguadilla](https://expedia.com/affiliates/hotel-search-aguadilla.whQBzkr).

### The plan, in one line

Snorkeling at Crash Boat in the morning, horseback or rappelling at midday, sunset from a rooftop and dinner by the ocean. The west coast does not ask for more planning than that.
